Recently, I purchased an HP MediaSmart EX485 running Windows Home Server.  What an awesome machine… it comes with 4 internal SATA bays, and an external SATA connection, as well as USB 2.0 ports.  The case is very small… basically the size of 5 hard drives high, 6 inches wide and 8 inches deep… a very nice size.  It comes with a 750GB hard drive.

The nice thing is that with WHS, you can continually add/replace drives to up your storage.  I had 2 80GB SATA drives kicking around, so I added those and got about 900GB available storage… then I went out and bought a Winchester Digital 1TB SATA drive for the fourth bay.  Almost 2TB of online storage – ah life is good :)

Of course, all of this is in anticipation of creating my automated home – all of my computers are now backing up correctly and all of my software, music, videos, and ebooks are now online.  Even my new MacBook Pro (but that’s for another post!).

I’m going to be converting my wife’s machine from her hand-me-down PC to a Mac Mini (since she only does email and surfing), and I’ll take her PC and actually use it for the automation server.
