Yeah, I had to get a Toslink to digital adapter for the MacBookPro to get
the digital audio out and into my TV. I guess most people aren't aware that
the headphones out on a MBP is also digital out with the right cable.

I haven't looked at Plex, but I will take a look. Still, since I'm using a
MBP, I have the issue of the 2nd screen not always working - so most likely,
this is only a temporary thing. Once the Boxee device comes out, I may go
to that.

I've gone with the Mac Mini as a media server hooked up to the AVR using a Toslink cable via Optical out for excellent surround sound audio and via the DVI out for the video. I keep all the ripped DVDs on a 1TB Ext HD and use the Elgato Turbo.264 HD for high speed rips. I like Boxee but it's still a little buggy so I prefer Plex as it has an awesome GUI and sees all my DVD files, TV Shows, and Music. I have also hooked up the Elgato EyeTV to the Mac Mini to access over the air channels and it has a DVR function to record to my Mac Mini as well. I still haven't given up on cable though as the HD quality still beats the Eye TV.
I am very interested in your Home automation project. I have used the Lutron system for 5 years that I control through my computer but there is no iPhone interface and it requires professional installation. Works great though as I have "Scenes" programmed into the computer, wall switches and remote hand held devices that operate lighting throughout the house w one touch operation.
